Vaporizers are quickly growing in popularity! It only makes sense. Vaporizing dry herb is far more efficient than starting your expensive herb on fire while most of it wastefully wafts away in a cloud of smelly smoke. Millions of medical cannabis patients and recreational herb enthusiasts have joined the 21st century and put down their matches. Plus, dry herb vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes. Despite the false perception that dry herb vaporizers are just used for medical or recreational cannabis, the truth is that herbal vaping can include any number of plants and herbs. Dry herb and wax vaporizers are our specialty. Whether looking for something stealthy or something with power and precision, you will find the herbal vape device you are looking for right here at Mig Vapor.
Taking the first step toward buying vaporizers can be tricky. There are so many different types of vaporizers! And so many ways to enjoy vapor from herbs. For example, dry herb vaping devices utilize a heating chamber to vaporize the active ingredients. Dry herb wax and oil vapes work with coils instead of heating chambers. It seems like a lot to take in but you will find all of the best information about vaporizers organized below.
In this vaporizer 101 guide, we look at how vaporizers work. In addition, we cover all of the different types of vaporizers. But we start with the basic question, what is a vaporizer?
What Is a Vaporizer?
What is a vaporizer? We get that question a lot! Is a vaporizer like an e-cigarette? No, an e-cig vaporizes a vape liquid with nicotine and is intended as an alternative to smoking tobacco. Eliquid vapes differ. Vaporizers utilize different types of replacement coils or heating chambers to vaporize herbal compounds. Do not put vape e-liquids in an herb vaporizer. And do not put dry herb, wax, or oils in an e-cigarette.
While e-cigs and vaporizers are different, they do have some traits in common. For example, both e-cigs and vaporizers are made up of three basic components:
- Atomizer or heating oven
- Cartridge, tank, or chamber to contain materials to be vaporized
A vaporizer heats an herb to the point that the active ingredients of any given herb convert into vapor. Heating methods include both convection and conduction. Most of today’s vaporizers utilize convection heating, which uses airflow to circulate heat and generate vapor. The vapor is then inhaled by the user. As a result, the vapor produced by a dry herb vaporizer is comprised almost entirely of the active ingredients.
That means that the vapor contains more active ingredients than smoke. A small amount of vapor will be more intense than a similar amount of smoke. Remember that while smoke contains some of the active ingredients that you want, smoke is also comprised of a noxious cocktail of toxic compounds that are the inevitable byproduct of combustion. Smoke is exactly what you don’t want.
A vaporizer is best defined as an electronic device designed as an alternative to smoking. Dry herb vaporizers convert the active ingredients of herbal substances into a vapor.
What Is A Vaporizer Used For?
A vaporizer is used to vaporize! Air vaporizers, or a vaporizer dome, vaporize water to generate humidity. Box mods and vape tanks use vape juice with nicotine. Nebulizers use essential oils. Technically, all of these devices can be called vaporizers. But for our purposes, a vaporizer is a specific device used as an alternative to smoking. Especially for cannabis, CBD, and other traditional herbs.
A vaporizer extracts the ingredients of herbal material without combustion. Plus a vaporizer is efficient and easy to use. A percolator bong, ice bongs, rolling papers and smoking all use combustion or burning. Vaporization heats a substance to the boiling temperature to convert the active ingredients into vapor. There is no burning.
A vaporizer converts substances into vapor without burning.
Most people associate vaporizer use with cannabis. CBD and marijuana vaporizers are the most common. Medical marijuana is legal in most states. And more and more states decriminalize recreational cannabis use thanks to the work of activists like Jane West and others. However, vaping and smoking herbs of all types goes back centuries. From lemongrass to sage to lavender. Tobacco can be vaporized but only if it is moist enough. The tobacco in cigarettes is too dry to vaporize.
A Quick History
The ancient Scythians used boiling hot stones to heat cannabis resulting in a breathable vapor. The 20th century saw a couple of attempts to make a viable electronic vaporizer. The first patents issued in 1930 to Joseph Robinson. Then in 1963, Herbert Gilbert produced a number of working prototypes. However, neither of these attempts resulted in mass production.
Vapor devices first entered the mass market in 2003. A Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik designed the first mass-produced e-cigarette. The first vape had a battery, atomizer, and cartridge for e-liquid. Vaporizers became viable because of the lithium-ion battery. The same technology that powered mobile devices that now drive communication. Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of juice in a small space. Enough power to generate the heat required to vaporize herbs.
Why Are Vaporizers So Popular?
The popularity of vaporizers can be described four-fold:
- Vaporization avoids combustions and all of the associated byproducts of smoke.
- Vaporizers also offer users options. For example, variable voltage temperature control vaporizers allow the user to customize the intensity of a vape session. Plus the ability to have unique and interesting experiences with different plants and plant extracts.
- A portable vaporizer is easy to use, maintain and can last for a year or more. Along with portability comes privacy because dry herb vapes are small, concealable, and do not leave the obvious tell-tale odor you get with smoking.
- Efficiency! This is a big one. Smoking wastes a large percentage of expensive herb because, literally, the herb goes up in smoke! A vaporizer extracts and vaporizers the active ingredients which are then contained in the device until the user inhales through the mouthpiece.
Smoking is widely known to cause poor health outcomes. We all know that smokers are prone to cancers and lung diseases. Nicotine is an addictive chemical but it is the toxic chemicals in the smoke that pose the greatest threat. Many of the same byproducts produced by smoking a cigarette are also present smoking cannabis or herbs. Vaping offers an alternative method to ingest plant material other than smoking.
Types of Vaporizers
There are just so many brands and types of vaporizers. We mention a few of the vaporizer brands throughout this guide but in this section, we focus on the types of vaporizers. And of course, we recommend Mig Vapor vaporizers vs. other brands. But we also make that recommendation with confidence. Our devices are unique and developed right here at Mig Vapor in the USA. We make all vaporizer types including dry herb, wax and oil pens, dab rigs, you name it.
Here are some examples of different types of vaporizers:
- A large desktop vape like the Volcano classic is designed for home use only.
- Portable dry herb vaporizers are the most common.
- Vape pens are small, pen-style vapes that are typically used with waxes and oils. Although Mig Vapor does make Herb-e, the smallest dry herb vaporizer.
- Concentrate vaporizer, also known as wax and oil pens, used with herbal extracts. Today the most common types of concentrate pens are dab pens.
- Wax vaporizer uses carborundum or quartz coils exclusively with wax concentrates. Examples of wax products include rosin, crumble, or budder.
Disposable or Re-Chargeable
Disposable vaporizers last only as long as the battery lasts. Then, they are thrown away. Disposable vape pens used for vaping CBD are common. But most people prefer rechargeable vape devices. Disposables have their place for travelers and campers. In addition, using a disposable vape pen is a way to try a CBD vape, as an example, to see if you like it before committing to buying a full vaporizer kit.
Rechargeable, portable dry herb vaporizers are the number one product for herbal vaping enthusiasts. A good vaporizer can last five years, or even longer. Factor in the efficiency of a vaporizer and getting more mileage out of the herb, a vaporizer easily pays for itself in short order. In addition, a vaporizer from Grenco Science or, better yet, Mig Vapor offers custom power settings to customize a vape session. The higher the temperature the more intense the vapor. Use lower temperature control settings for a more mellow vapor experience.
Desktop Vaporizers or Portable Vape?
The biggest physical difference between a desktop vaporizer and a portable hand-held dry herb vape is size. The large desktop vaporizers, like the Arizer Extreme or Volcano Hybrid, sit on a table in your home and plug into a wall outlet. Desktop units are too large to carry around with you! They are meant for home use only.
Just a few years ago, a desktop vape outperformed any portable herb vapes on the market. Then came Pax, Davinci IQ2, Magic Flights, Flowermate V50S mini pro, digital vaporizers and more. The game changed. Then came Mig Vapor and we stood everything on its head.
Mig Vapor dry herb vaporizers set the standard. Imagine the efficiency and vapor production of a desktop vape now available in a hand-held vape device. We did that. Our proprietary ceramic heating technology combined with the largest heating chambers in the industry alongside the best battery technology all team up to deliver a vaping session unlike any other. Pure flavor and dense vapor.
Perhaps the best part of our Mig Vapor vaporizer technology is that we keep the prices low. We don’t stick $250 or $300 price tags on things. We are an independent American company with our own research and development team. Plus we have no board to answer to nor are we beholding to any distributors. We are truly independent. That’s why we can offer the best vaporizer technology at a low price.
Can I Use A Vape Mod To Vape Herbs?
A mod kit with a vape tank will not vaporize dry herbs. Vape mods and electronic cigarettes are designed for vape juice with nicotine. However, there is an exception.
Connect a dry herb or wax tank to a vape mod to work with herbs or concentrates. The Mig Vapor Sub Herb converts any vape mod with a 510 connection into an instant dry herb vape. The Brain Fogger instantly converts a mod into a wax vape.
How Do Vaporizers Work?
The basic design of a vaporizer has not changed since the first prototypes in the 1960s. Vaping involves a simple process: your device is built with the straightforward purpose of heating materials and e-liquid to the point that it turns into vapor.
Combustion results when a substance is heated to the “ignition” temperature. Vaporization occurs when a substance is heated to the “boiling” temperature.
- Note that oil pen kits heat oil to the “smoke” temperature. Oils do not actually vaporize.
What Is The Best Vaporizer?
The best vaporizer really means the best one for you. And that is different from person to person. Mig Vapor starter kits serve all styles and needs of herbal vapers. Some social media sites will have all sorts of people telling you to buy everything from the Puffco Plus to the Boundless CFC to the Yocan Evolve Plus to the latest device from Pax Labs. These are famous, corporate vaporizer brands. Or if you walk into a dispensary they may tell you to buy dip devices or spoon pipes or a pro vaporizer. The point is that there will be no shortage of suggestions and advice. But what do you really want?
The first thing you want is to avoid burning. That means looking for a vape device with a heating chamber with no exposed metal coils. Materials burn when they come into contact with a metal coil. And burning defeats the entire reason for buying vaporizers!
This is where Mig Vapor stands out. Our heating chambers utilize our own proprietary design with ceramic heating. The metal coils never come in contact with your expensive materials. That’s so important and one of the main reasons why you find the best devices and vaporizer accessories right here at Mig Vapor. Are we biased? Maybe. But more than anything we are confident. By the way, we back up our confidence with the best warranty.
Next up we consider quality. Specifically, build quality, processor, and vape pen battery quality. The pen battery and processor control heat up time, precision temperature control, and efficiency. The battery quality is key to both the overall longevity of your device as well as vaping consistency. Once again, we take the opportunity to promote Mig Vapor devices. Our battery technology is industry-leading. Plus our build quality is second to none. We also work with the best manufacturers on the planet.
Best Tasting Vapor
Now, vapor quality counts. No doubt. And many say the Arizer Solo or Arizer Air with the all-glass vapor pathway is the best. And we give props to the Solo. But we also have the Khan and the Four, both with an all-glass vapor pathway. In addition, Khan and Four feature precision temperature control and the biggest heating chambers in the business. They hold almost a full gram. Huge.
We feel that a large part of why Mig Vapor herbal vape products deliver outstanding flavor is our battery, processor, and coil technology. Namely the ability for the user to customize the session based on the temperature setting. Even our smallest dry herb vaporizer, the Herb-e, allows the user to adjust the temperature and session intensity. The vaporization temperature affects the flavor output. Khan even works with a water bubbler better than a water pipe! Ultimately, the vaping experience can be dialed in to your specific preference because technology provides the flexibility to do so.
How To Use A Vaporizer
If you are new to vaping the prospect of learning how to use a vaporizer is super easy. Sure, starting something on fire seems easier, but it is not. You need ash catchers and even if you have smoking pipes, a water pipe, Empire Glasswork or a little Marley Natural, it’s still burning. Ditch the caveman fire technology and join the 21st century. Follow these basic steps to use a vaporizer:
- Fully charge the vaporizer battery
- Use herb grinders to prepare materials to be vaporized
- When using the herb grinder, the ground should be medium, not too fine
- Remove the mouthpiece, or drip tip, and open the heating chamber
- Fill the chamber with herb, use the packing tool too fill
- The fill should not be too loose nor too tight, you will get the hang of it
- Close the heating chamber and attach the mouthpiece
- Press the power button five times to turn on the vaporizer
- Wait 30 to 90 seconds for the device to heat up
- An indicator light will tell you when the device is ready
- Enjoy your vaping experience
- Once the flavor and vapor dissipate, you know the material is exhausted
- Turn off the vaporizer
- The heating chamber will be hot so wait at least 30 minutes
- Open the heating oven and use the brush to clean out the vaped herb
There is a slight variation in how to use a vaporizer depending on the brand. For instance, the Ghost MV1, Lite Vaporizer, Max Starry, Pax 2, and Mig Vapor Dray are all different. Our heating chambers are bigger and we offer precision control. But in general, these steps cover how to use any dry herb vape.
How To Use Oil Vapes, Dab, Wax Pens
Remember that dab and wax pens operate differently than a dry herb vaporizer. Wax vaporizers work with wax and concentrates. Instead of a heating chamber, wax pens use carborundum or quartz coils. Many companies make wax vape pens including Grenco Science, Dr Dabber, G Pen Nova, Pen Nova LXE, etc. There is a long list of brands. But the best wax vaporizers are right here at Mig Vapor.
Mig Vapor wax pens like the Wasp use carborundum coils. And carborundum works best! Quartz works almost as well. The Mig Vapor KeyMaker wax pens offer stealth, ease of use, and better affordability than the competition.
How To Use A Wax Vaporizer:
- Make sure the pen battery is fully charged
- Remove the drip tip and mouthpiece
- Open the heating chamber
- Ensure the coil is in place
- Use a dab tool to place a portion of concentrate directly on the coil
- Close the heating chamber and install mouthpiece/drip tip
- Press the power button five times to power on the device
- Press and hold power button to heat the concentrate and inhale
Using an oil pen vape does not require a heat up time. Oil vapes work similarly to e-cigarettes. The coil and wick become saturated with oil while the atomizer applies the heat.
Also, check out Mig Vapor’s Brain Fogger and Sub Herb. The Brain Fogger is a vape tank attachment that turns your vape mod into a wax vaporizer. The Sub Herb turns your mod into a dey herb vape.
Custom Temperature Control Vaporizers
Mig Vapor dry herb vaporizers, wax pens, and CBD oil vapes offer unique quality not easily found elsewhere. That is to say that even our smallest dry herb vaporizer, the stealthy and beautiful Herb-e, offers multiple custom options. That includes three different temperature settings. The lowest setting for a mild session, the medium setting for medium, and a high setting for an intense hit.
Moving to our portable, hand-held herb and cannabis vaporizers, the customization options expand. For example, the Khan, Dray, and Four all deliver precise temperature control. The vaporizer microprocessor controls the heating chamber temperature down to single degrees. To clarify, that means if you set the vaporization temperature to 415 F the heating chamber will heat to exactly 415 F. This level of control translates into total control of your vaping experience.
Are Dry Herb Vaporizers Healthier?
Hospitals in Israel use dry herb vaporizes to deliver medical marijuana benefits to patients. They use the Volcano digital vaporizer right in the hospital. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN medical reporter, completed a multiple part series on cannabis. Dr. Gupta has stated that he believes that a vaporizer is the best way to access the herbal benefits. Edibles absorb unevenly and smoking is a known risk.
When the State of New York legalized medical marijuana, they stipulated that patients could not smoke cannabis. The state insisted that patients either consume or vaporize medical cannabis. Some science suggests that dry herb vaporizers are healthier than smoking. Also, no smoking accessories like ashtrays, matches, or air fresheners needed!
Is A Vaporizer Harmful?
Many people are wondering is a vaporizer harmful? The reports of vape lung illness from black market THC concentrate oils caused a media stir in late 2019 and into 2020. But the truth is that the illicit cannabis concentrate oils caused the problem. The vaporizer itself is simply a piece of technology.
The CDC warned about vape lung illness and advised against using vape devices. But they eventually clarified that street made cannabis oils cause the danger. What you put in the vaporizer controls what the vaporizer produces. With that said, some vape pens and dry herb vaporizers are better than others. Obviously. Overall, the biggest concern regarding whether or not vaporizers are safe relates to the THC oil put into oil vape cartridges.
- Warning! Cheap oil cartridges imported from China show signs of lead contamination. A California lab tested THC oil cartridges finding lead contamination. These cartridges are sold on the street as well as on online auction sites. Only buy CBD vape cartridges, or any oil carts, from proven US companies like Mig Vapor.
Switching and Nicotine
Can a vaporizer be used for smoking cessation? First, the FDA does not recognize any vape device as a smoking cessation device. Second, a vaporizer uses dry herb and not nicotine vape juice. We advise smokers to consider an e-cigarette starter kit.
Users can vaporize tobacco but it must be moist tobacco, not cigarette tobacco.
Vape Accessories And Replacement Parts
A Mig Vapor dry herb vaporizer seldom requires replacement parts. Occasionally a new mouthpiece or battery charger or cleaning brush perhaps. But older dry herb devices use screens that must be replaced. The screen supposedly keeps the material from touching the heating coil. But we advise ceramic heating chambers with no screens or dip pads needed.
Wax and oil vaporizers require replacement coils and atomizers from time to time. Particularly oil carts with coils and wicks.
Coils and Wicks: Oil cart coils must be used on the appropriate, matching vape pen. A change in vapor taste will alert you to when replacement is needed.
Pod Systems: Some vaporizer designs, such as pod systems like the Ccell Palm cartridge vaporizer, also called pot mods, allow users to switch out the coils, wick, and e-juice all at the same time for simple replacements. Pre-filled cannabis mods are not available in all states.
What is a good vaporizer to buy for flower, weed, or tobacco?
There are many types of vaporizers. The perception that dry herb vaporizers are just for medical or recreational marijuana, could not be further from the truth. There is more to this than weed vaporizers. There are traditions going back thousands of years smoking herbs of all different types. For example, people from all different cultures have smoked lavender, sage, cloves, and many other herbs for thousands of years. In addition, some vaporizers are even used for aromatherapy. We offer these products to be used with herbal remedies. See our guide to understanding herbal smoking and vaping.
Vaporization technology is diverse and, best of all, avoids the worst byproducts of the rapid chemical reactions involved in combustion. Smoking vs vaporization is essentially like comparing a stone-age technology with 21st-century technology. So whether you want to vaporize e-juice, plants, or a hemp CBD vaporizer there are numerous options available.
